Sr. Labour Relations Counsel      The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world seeks an experienced Labour Relations Counsel for our Toronto office, located in Mississagua.  ALPA represents more than 75,000 pilots at 43 airlines in Canada and the United States.  Under minimal direct supervision and within the limitations of Association policy, the Sr. Labour Relations Counsel provides assistance to pilot governing bodies and to individual members on all subjects that affect their employment.  They use thorough understanding of applicable laws and comprehensive experience in Association policies and procedures to handle an extensive range of complex labour relations assignments, often on short notice, and function as a labour relations professional.  They handle all dispute resolution matters under the collective agreement; manage actions against individual pilots; prepare summaries of Transport Canada (TC) Accident/Incident hearings; monitor and administer contracts; and, handle all case management functions.  They also provide staff assistance in all phases of negotiating agreements and coordinate all activities during negotiations while concurrently maintaining communication with all interested parties.  They also have some limited responsibility for administrative assistants and/or paralegals employed in the office.  They actively listen, build trust, and adapt their style and tactics to fit the audience.  Must be flexible and mobile - sometimes on short notice - based on meeting calendars, projects, and support demands.  Infrequently, they may be called upon at any hour to respond to safety-related emergency inquiries. At times, issues may be time-sensitive and of critical importance to the Association.  Working in coordination with other departments and committees, they will be relied upon to make recommendations regarding the strategy and actions that should be taken in each situation.  Travel required:  usually 25 – 50%; sporadically 50 – 75%. Aviation and/or labour law experience preferred.  At management discretion, significant and in-depth, directly applicable, labour arbitration and/or alternate dispute resolution experience may be substituted for some of the above requirements.  - Experience in collective bargaining and grievance arbitration preferred. - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff; external contacts; senior legal and aviation professionals; and, pilots. - Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to organize and coordinate tactics for long-term objectives. - Demonstrated ability to use independent judgement to formulate decisions and/or solve problems, under time pressure and urgent conditions. - Knowledge of Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) and/or Transport Canada (TC) regulations strongly preferred but not required. - Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate mid- and long-term endeavours. - Experience using online legal research, Westlaw or the equivalent, preferred. - Software: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.   Physical Demands: Note: The physical demands described herein are characteristic of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.   Senior Benefits Attorney       The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 74,000 pilots at 43 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Sr. Benefits Attorney for our office in Tysons (McLean), Virginia.  The Sr. Benefits Attorney builds and maintains relationships with pilot governing boards, councils, and committees, as well as with the airline benefits professionals and outside consultants and advisors; handles complex benefit issues; and, works in a fast-paced, collaborative culture, supporting pilot groups on issues that encompass the entire range of employee benefits matters, including defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans, nonqualified deferred compensation plans, health and welfare benefit plans, and employee fringe benefit plans.   Responsibilities:   - provides legal support to pilot groups on benefit matters; - assists in negotiating pilot retirement, healthcare, and welfare benefits; - drafts language for collective bargaining agreements and other agreements with employers relating to benefits issues; - drafts, reviews, and analyzes pilot retirement, healthcare, and welfare benefit plans for compliance with the collective bargaining agreement(s) and applicable law; - reviews and analyzes proposed legislation affecting pilots' retirement, healthcare, and welfare benefits; - drafts, reviews, and makes recommendations with respect to agreements between ALPA and its insurers, brokers, and other service providers; - interprets retirement, healthcare, and welfare benefit plan language and related documentation in connection with benefit disputes and testifies as a subject matter expert (SME) in grievance arbitrations; - conducts legal research and analysis and investigates issues relating to benefits matters; - prepares articles summarizing case law and legislation relevant to pilot benefits; - makes presentations to national committees, pilot groups, and other ALPA staff; and, - keeps abreast of legal, legislative, and administrative developments in employee benefits   Local, national, and international travel, at times on short notice, is required: up to 35%.   ALPA is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in a safe workplace.
