Digital & Mass Communications Specialist

 

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 63,000 pilots at 35 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Digital & Mass Communications Specialist for our Tysons (McLean), Virginia office.  The Digital & Mass Communications Specialist is a public relations/mass communications pro with four plus (4+) years of relevant digital and mass communications experience.  Whether you have a PR agency background, worked as a news media reporter, come from an association or non-profit, or worked on Capitol Hill or in government affairs, your expertise in mass communications – with a particular emphasis on social media platforms - and how it relates to politics, public policy, and our members will serve you well as you contribute to the Association’s Communications Department.  As a successful communications professional, you must be able to multitask efficiently; have excellent communication, writing, editing, and social media skills; be able to spot trends; analyze data; and, apply various measurement tools to managing and tracking ALPA’s messaging on digital platforms.

Minimum Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing, or Public Relations, from an accredited college or university required; or, the equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree in a communications field is desirable.
  • Three (3) years of public relations experience required, four (4) or more strongly preferred, with expertise in digital communications, media relations, and/or public affairs also strongly preferred.
  • Strong social media coordination skills required, including live tweeting throughout assigned events.
  • Proficiency in working across traditional and interactive media strongly preferred.
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills.
  • Experience handling numerous projects at the same time.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, external contacts, and pilots.
  • Software: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Able to work flexible schedule on short-notice as needed.
  • Works well under pressure and tight deadlines.

Constantly operates a computer/smartphone/tablet.  Regularly required to maintain a stationary position, move about the office and the local metropolitan area, determine what others have said or written, and converse with others and exchange accurate information.

 

Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office.  Also include occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving, e.g., to pack, unpack, and/or move cases.

 

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.).  While on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs.  (Assistance may not always be available.)
