Enterprise Data Architect


The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 59,000 pilots at 33 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Data Architect for our Herndon, Virginia, office.  The Data Architect will work with business knowledge experts and Association leadership to define the vision of ALPA’s data store, i.e. to translate data and reporting requirements from a logical design into the physical database(s) repository(ies).  S/he will work with system designers and developers to address issues of data migration (validation, clean-up, transformation, and mapping) and will ensure data dictionaries are maintained and available to support data understanding and reporting requirements.  S/he should be an expert at both defining data structures and data integration and archiving practices, whether for business intelligence or operational uses.

Minimum Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., Computer Engineering, Computer Science, IT, or related field, from an accredited college or university required; master’s degree or completion of post-graduate courses in related field preferred; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
  • Five (5) years of related experience required, six (6) or more years strongly preferred. Additional applicable experience may be substituted for academic requirements.
  • Data modeling, data warehousing, data extraction and transformation (ETL), and Business Intelligence (BI) related projects and SQL Server experience required.
  • Required Tools:
    • BI reporting and data visualization tools, Tableau preferred
    • Data modeling tools, e.g., erwin data modeler
    • Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) Tools, e.g., SSIS/SSRS

  • Expertise with enterprise security and familiarity with authentication environments, particularly ADFS and IdentityServer, strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with systems analysis, design, and requirements gathering strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge/skills in SQL required; MongoDB strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with all levels of contacts, internal and external.
  • Must be a self-starter with professional maturity and sound judgment, capable of independent decision-making.
  • Must possess exceptional time management skills; be able to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; and, transition easily between projects.
  • Software: Microsoft Office and Project strongly preferred.

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.).  While on travel, may be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, boxes, cases, and/or files weighing as much as 50 lbs.  (Assistance may not always be available.)
