Occupational Health & Safety Specialist
The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world, seeks an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist for our office in Ottawa, Ontario. ALPA represents more than 77,000 pilots at 42 airlines in Canada and the United States. The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for coordinating the delivery of services provided by the following ALPA Canada Pilot Groups and their Committees including, but not limited to, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and ALPA’s Air Safety Organization (ASO), including Pilot Assistance. Under general supervision and within the limitations of Association policy, the Paralegal provides contractual and legal research support and assists in the analysis of contractual disputes. They work closely with MEC officers, representatives, and committee volunteers to assist in gathering information and evidence in order to review and analyze potential contract issues and support and assist in the development of strategies and tactics for resolution. They interact with pilot members to assess whether potential disputes exist under the Pilot Working Agreement (PWA) and, if so, work with management representatives to informally resolve the dispute while also handling contractual appeals of disputes that are not resolved earlier in the resolution process, including the subsequent processing of cases to the System Board of Adjustment, the preparation of the cases at the Board, and the preparation of post-hearing briefs. They also provide support and assistance in the preparation and processing of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforcement cases at all stages, up to and including appeals and filing appeal briefs. The eLearning modules will cover a variety of subject areas including, but not limited to, finance, legal, and other policy issues; business system training; and, information about ALPA events. Fully developed eLearning modules will usually reside on ALPA’s Learning Management System (LMS).
Required skills for this position include:
- Working knowledge of modern adult learning and visual design principles and best practices.
- Ability to complete instructional analysis, including needs, learner, task, and context analysis.
- Skilled in designing learning objectives, design documentation, storyboards, instructional scripts, and training guides, while guiding subject matter experts.
- Ability to develop effective and innovative solutions such as interactive digital learning experiences and infographics.
- Implementation of member-focused educational campaigns and training while collaborating with SMEs, stakeholders, and a cross-functional team consisting of internal staff, LMS administrators, and strategy & solutions specialists.
- Experience in measuring and evaluating training effectiveness through learner experience and learning analytics.

Qualifications:

Senior Labor Relations Counsel
The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 77,000 pilots at 43 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks a Sr. Labor Relations Counsel to represent more than 15,500 United pilots for our Rosemont, IL office. Under minimal direct supervision and within the limitations of Association policy, the Senior Labor Relations Counsel provide assistance to pilot governing bodies and to individual members on all subjects that affect their employment. They use thorough understanding of applicable laws and Association policies and procedures to handle an extensive range of complex labor relations assignments, often on short notice, and function as a labor relations professional. They also provide staff assistance in monitoring and administering collective bargaining agreements; managing FAA and company actions against individual pilots; preparing summaries of NTSB Accident/Incident hearings; handling all case management functions; and, on occasion, working on national projects in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. They actively listen, build trust, and adapt their style and tactics to fit the needs of the project. Infrequently, they may be called upon at any hour to respond to safety-related emergency inquiries. Travel on short notice may be required.
